19th July celebrations
19th of July, anniversary of the Rojava revolution, was celebrated all around northern Syria. delegates and spokespersons of the revolutionary movements spoke at big events where celebratory events were held. Many women gatherings emphasized the importance of YPJ, reivindicating their role in the revolution and the need for a solution in the ongoing integration negotiations.
Return of IDP as critical step for integration
One of the critical issues of the integration process is the return of internally displaced families. A convoy of 500 families is expected to return to Serekaniye at the end of this first week of August, even if tensions and and threats are still a constant reality for Kurdish families returning to the region due to the extended presance of militias affiliated with the Turkish State. More families are also returning to Afrin villages and towns, with constant reports of destroyed and looted houses as well as security threats against returnees.
Alouk water station rehabilitation
Ongoing works for the Alouk water station rehabilitation are expected to finish soon. After recent tests, the water station located in the Serekaniye countryside resumed its work after years not functioning due to the Turkish militias intervention. It is expected to once again provide water to Hasakah region and beyond, but due to extended periods of degradation there are many tasks of maintenance that are being finished to resume its operations. An inauguration event was disrupted when some armed groups affiliated with the Turkish militias attack the official convoy that visited Serekaniye. This official convoy was composed by Noureddin Issa Ahmed, former SDF commander and current Hasakah governor, together with a delegation of the Syrian government.
Wheat harvest season
The wheat harvest season is coming to its end, with a positive evaluation. Besides some fires that destroyed fields in different regions, the season was good and over 3 millions of tons of wheat had been collected over all Syria, with Northern Syria playing a prominent role. Works for improvement for facilities like warehouses, silos and other storage centers are important to ensure good administration of this important resource that is an important source of income for many farmers of Syria.
NATO meeting and Lebanon build up
During the NATO meeting held in Istanbul in early July, a meeting between al-Sharaa and Trump was held. After that meeting, Trump made declarations hinting at preparations for a Syrian intervention in Libanon to “deal with Hezbollah”. Nevertheless Syria’s president denies plans to enter Lebanon, even as his government tightens pressure on Hezbollah-linked routes and networks. The evidence points to calibrated border pressure, not an imminent invasion, stepping up efforts to disrupt arms smuggling and dismantle networks linked to the Iran-backed group that was one of the main support of Bashar al-Assad regime.
Remanents of the 2019 Turkish invasion in the reintegration process
As the integration process continues, the fates of some Kurdish people who stayed in grey zones since the Turkish offensive of 2019 are being resolved. Dozgin Temo, known by her combat name Çiçek Kobanê, a fighter for the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Turkish court in Şanlıurfa. Videos from how she was captured in 2019 where islamist figthers where threatening her had stron impact on social networks. She was transfered to Turkey where she was recorded in video as a proof of life to dismiss rumors of summary execution. Now this sentance of life imprisonment raised strong reactions, questioning the approach of the Turkish State with the ongoing peace process. On another track, 2 health workers of the self-administration captured in the M4 highway by turkish affiliated military groups in 2019 have been recently released in the ongoing prisoner exchanges. After 7 years captive without any trial or any legal process to justify their imprisonment, their families celebrated their return.
Turkish parliament working a legal frame for peace process
Turkey is currently finalizing a Framework Law to provide the legal basis for the disarmament, dissolution, and reintegration of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), marking a shift from previous political-only negotiations to a legislative process overseen by Parliament. The Turkish government intends to pass this temporary, standalone law before the parliamentary summer recess in August 2026, following negotiations between the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the National Movement Party (MHP), and the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, with Abdullah Öcalan having reportedly agreed to the draft terms. KCK already made statements acknowledging the ongoing process and calling for contention until they can evaluate the terms of such document.
Evaluation
As for evaluation this month, we want to move away from traditional geopolitical analysis and get a closer look on the daily life and revolutionary achievments in norther Syria over the 14 years of revolution.
